The Ghana Scholarship Fund
was founded by Kathleen Hubbard-Ismail, a member of the Board of Directors of Global
Volunteers and an on-going volunteer with over `15 years of service. To quote Kathleen, “In January 2009, I traveled with Global Volunteers on a service program to Senchi Ferry, Ghana and it changed
my life.
The
children of this rural village touched me like no other place I have ever been. I learned first-hand how bright, thirsty and
eager these children are to learn, to absorb and to know. Their only barrier to a brighter future is education
and because they deserve a life of fulfillment, I am called to help.
Together, we can offer hope to these children and make it our
legacy to them. I am privileged and grateful to have been invited into this community, whose primary goal is to educate their
children. I now share their dream. My heart chose these children. The rest of me followed. I hope
you will follow too." Global Volunteer service programs are short-term human development programs. Volunteers work in close partnership
with local people at the invitation of local people and under the direction of local leaders. Global Volunteers' purpose
is to maintain a sustained service partnership with the host community and provide volunteers a genuine opportunity to serve, while creating a foundation for world peace through mutual understanding. Established in 1984
,
a decade before the media coined the term "volunteer vacations," Global Volunteers pioneered direct service-learning
programs abroad. Today, they mobilize more than 2,500 volunteers annually on work projects, assisting more than 100
host communities in 20 countries on 6 continents through volunteer service, direct-project funding, and child sponsorships.
In order for them to continue to make a difference to the children and communities they serve around
the world, they depend upon volunteers. If you believe you would like to join a service team, travel to a new and exotic
community in complete safety and under the leadership, care and guidance of a Global Volunteer staff member, please contact
